If you drive for DoorDash in Orange County, California, don’t assume your regular personal auto insurance automatically covers you while making deliveries.
This is one of the biggest insurance mistakes gig-economy drivers can make.
DoorDash itself warns that many personal auto policies are designed for personal driving rather than delivery work. If an insurer treats DoorDash driving as business use, your personal policy may not cover certain claims while you’re delivering.
Does My Regular Auto Insurance Cover DoorDash?
Maybe—but you need to verify it with your insurance company.
A standard personal auto policy is primarily designed for personal use such as commuting, errands and everyday driving. Using the vehicle to earn money delivering food can change the exposure.
DoorDash specifically advises drivers that personal policies may not cover vehicle damage while dashing and suggests considering either a personal auto policy that permits delivery activity or a commercial auto policy.
Simply having “full coverage” doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.
You could have comprehensive and collision coverage on your personal policy, but those coverages still need to apply while the vehicle is being used for delivery.
Doesn’t DoorDash Provide Insurance?
DoorDash does maintain certain insurance for Dashers, but you should not treat it as a replacement for your own auto insurance.
DoorDash requires drivers using automobiles to maintain their own auto insurance meeting applicable state requirements.
For California, which falls under DoorDash’s current “All Other US States” category, DoorDash says its third-party auto liability coverage applies during the Delivery Service Period—beginning when you accept a delivery request and ending when the delivery is completed, unassigned or canceled. If you’re online but haven’t accepted a delivery, your own auto insurance is primary.
That’s an important distinction.
What Does DoorDash’s Insurance Cover?
During an active delivery, DoorDash says its insurance may provide third-party liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage you cause to others, subject to policy terms and state requirements. DoorDash currently describes coverage of up to $1 million in most states.
But here’s the part every Dasher should understand:
DoorDash’s liability coverage does NOT pay to repair your own car.
DoorDash specifically states that damage to the Dasher’s own vehicle is the driver’s responsibility and should be addressed through the driver’s own insurer.
Imagine you’re driving a $30,000 vehicle and get into an accident while delivering.
Finding out after the accident that your personal insurer excludes delivery use is not when you want to discover the coverage gap.
What About When I’m Waiting for an Order?
This is another area drivers need to understand.
DoorDash says that in California and most other states, if you’re online but haven’t accepted a delivery request, DoorDash’s auto liability coverage does not apply; your own auto insurance is primary.
That makes the wording of your personal auto policy particularly important.
You want to know how your insurer treats:
App off → App on/waiting → Delivery accepted → Driving to restaurant → Driving to customer → Delivery completed.
Ask your insurance agent to explain exactly when your personal policy applies.
Do I Need Commercial Auto Insurance for DoorDash?
Not necessarily.
Depending on the insurance company, you may have several possibilities:
1. Personal auto insurance that permits delivery use
Some insurers may allow certain food-delivery activity.
2. Personal auto + delivery/rideshare endorsement
Some insurers offer endorsements designed to address gig-driving exposures, although the exact protection varies.
3. Commercial auto insurance
If your personal insurer won’t cover the delivery exposure—or your delivery activity requires it—a commercial auto policy may be appropriate.
DoorDash itself identifies a delivery-friendly personal policy or commercial auto insurance as options drivers can consider.
Does a Rideshare Endorsement Automatically Cover DoorDash?
No.
Don’t assume an endorsement designed for Uber or Lyft automatically covers DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub or other delivery services.
DoorDash warns that a rideshare endorsement may not provide complete coverage while dashing. For example, an endorsement might address one stage of app usage but not an active delivery.
Always confirm the exact permitted use with the insurance company.
What Should I Tell My Insurance Agent?
Be completely upfront.
Tell your agent:
“I use this vehicle to make deliveries for DoorDash.”
Also mention any other apps you use, such as Uber Eats, Instacart, Grubhub or similar services.
Your agent can then determine whether your existing carrier allows that use and, if not, look for another insurance solution.
Trying to save money by not disclosing delivery use could create a much bigger problem when a claim occurs.
