Getting your license back isn’t automatic once your suspension time is up. In California, you must proactively complete these steps in order.
1. Confirm Your Eligibility Date
Before doing anything, verify exactly when you are eligible for reinstatement.
- How to check: Visit the Oceanside DMV on Canyon Drive or check your driver record online at the CA DMV website.
- Tip: Ensure any court-ordered suspension and the DMV’s “Admin Per Se” suspension are both addressed.
2. Complete Your DUI Program (if applicable)
If your suspension was alcohol-related, you must enroll in and complete a state-licensed DUI program.
- Westminster/Oceanside Locals: Make sure the provider is licensed by the State of California. Once finished, they will issue a “Notice of Completion” certificate.
3. Install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
Many 2026 reinstatement cases (especially repeat offenses or high BAC) now require an IID.
- The Rule: You must have the device installed by an authorized provider and bring the “Proof of Installation” form to the DMV.
4. File Your SR-22 (The Most Critical Step)
This is where James Banh and Starwest Insurance come in.
- Action: Call us at 714-231-0897. We will issue your SR-22 and electronically file it with the DMV instantly.
- Important: Ensure your policy meets the updated 30/60/15 liability limits.
5. Pay Your DMV Reissue Fees
The DMV doesn’t work for free! You will need to pay a reissue fee to get your physical license back.
- Typical Cost: Usually between $100 – $125 depending on the violation.
6. Visit the DMV in Person
For DUI-related reinstatements, you cannot do this online.
- Bring with you: Your completion certificate, proof of IID (if required), and your payment. Since we file your SR-22 electronically, it should already be in their system when you arrive!
🛑 Pro-Tip: Avoid the “SR-22 Restart”
If your insurance policy cancels or lapses for even one day, your insurance company is legally required to send an SR-26 to the DMV. This will:
- Instantly re-suspend your license.
- Restart your 3-year filing clock from day one.
Stay protected. Stay on the road.
